The visitors survived a scare in the opening minute when the referee brushed aside strong claims for a penalty when Michael Bruce looked to have been impeded inside the box. Hearts raced to the other end and Ryan Thomson laid the ball into the path of Chris Hyndlay whose netbound effort from six yards was somehow miraculously deflected onto the crossbar by 'keeper Richard Wilson.
Back at the other end, a Darren Bald corner broke out to Stuart Wilson just outside the box, he swept in a drive through a ruck of players' which inched past Chris Pratt's right hand post.
A darting run from Martin Woods took him past two Fernieside defenders and into the box before the ball was cleared for a corner.
Star were putting themselves under pressure by conceding too many needless free kicks just outside the box, Wilson fired one round the wall which was gathered by Pratt.
The visitors were undone however in the 34th minute, Bald, who was the home sides best player, curled in an effort from the corner of the box and 'keeper Pratt could only watch as it soared over his head and into the roof of the net.
Just after the restart Pratt prevented his side from going further behind by pushing a clipped effort from Chris Somerville round the post for a corner.
That man Bald again got behind the Star defence but again Pratt was equal to the task with a good one-handed stop.
