Star Hearts History

Undoubtedly their greatest triumph came at Hampden Park on the evening of Saturday 10th May 1975 when they won the top accolade - The Scottish Amateur Cup, beating Morriston YMCA by 2 goals to 1. This win erased the disappointment of the defeat at the same venue 2 years earlier when they lost 1 - 0 to Knockentiber Amateurs. Apart from these 2 final appearances they were beaten semi finalists in 1979/80 and have lost out in the quarter finals on a number of occasions.

The Fife Amateur Cup has been won a record 10 times and almost became their personal property reaching 9 consecutive finals from 1968 to 1976 winning 7 times

In 1984/85 the club were one of the founder members of the Kingdom Caledonian AFA in which they presently compete.

It is to the credit of both the players and committee throughout the years that the club has been at the forefront of amateur football.

Star Hearts made it second time lucky on Saturday 10th May 1975 when they won the Scottish Amateur Cup. They defeated Morriston Y.M.C.A by 2 goals to 1 at Hampden park, Glasgow and brought the cup back to the sleepy village of Star. Star Hearts seemed to be coasting to victory but a late fighback by Morriston caused a few hearts to stop beating if only for a short while.

Tom Black dives full length to put Hearts in the lead.

It was Morriston who were first to attack when winger Byrne drove a left foot shot over the bar. Morriston kept the pressure on forcing Star to defend desperately. Star had to wait 10 minutes before Black forced his way through only to shoot wide. But after 30 minutes Star took the lead. A long cross by right back Marshall was brilliantly headed home by Black. Erskine hit the bar for Morriston just before half time.

Gerry Tweedie scores Star Hearts second goal with another diving header.

Star scored there second goal on the hour mark when a long cross from Marshall was headed into the net by Tweedie. Morriston kept plugging away and were rewarded in 69 minutes when a header by McChrone was pushed onto the bar by Braid but Murray was on hand to smash the ball into the back of the Star net. In the closing minutes Marshall had to look lively by heading the ball off the Star goal line to stop extra time being played. Referee R. Wilson blew for full time much to the relief of the Star Hearts team and traveling fans. The Scottish Amateur Cup was on its way to Star of Markinch in Central Fife.

Manager Dave Leitch holding The Scottish Amateur Cup.

Star Hearts Manager and now President said after the match - "The lads worked hard for there victory. However I would not like to go through those final minutes again. My stomach was turning over as Morriston kept attacking"

Tom Marshall received the Man of the Match award for his performance during the now famous victory.
