SATURDAY 17TH MAY

SCOTTISH BREWERS CUP FINAL

Bowhill Rovers _____0    Star Hearts _____2

A goal in either half saw Star add the Scottish Brewers Cup to their long list of honours.

The final, played at Kingskettle, saw chances aplenty for both sides but it was the Treaton Park side who took theirs to take the glory on the day.

Bowhill were first to threaten with a header that came back off the post.

Star replied and good link up play between Gordon Grieve and Kevin Laidlaw set up Steve Greenlaw to volley over the crossbar.

Hearts made the breakthrough just before the half time interval, Mark Reilly turned his marker before setting up Rab Martin who slotted the ball past 'keeper Malky Dewar from just inside the box.

Rovers continued to create chances but couldn't conjure up a goal.

Star doubled their advantage midway through the second half, Craig Nicholson beat two Bowhill players before laying the ball into the path of Michael Sullivan who drilled it low past Dewar from the edge of the box.

Bowhill then laid siege on the Star goal and won a series of corners but they still couldn't find a way through.

With 10 minutes to go they were given another opportunity when they were awarded a penalty when the referee adjudged Steve Greenlaw had deliberately handled the ball, the Star man was red-carded, however, from the resultant spot kick the ball came back off the cross bar and cleared.

Bowhill pressed right to the end and twice Star 'keeper Chris Pratt was forced into making good stops.

Ten-man Hearts held out and the cup was on it's way back to Jamies Bar in Markinch.
